Leaving Agerola along the road SS 163 in direction Amalfi - Salerno we shortly find the sign: Welcome to Furore - the painted city. Indeed, it really seems to be painted.
Promenading along the railings one is captivated by the fabulous view over the sea. The elegant building of the town hall, presenting a combination of glass-walls and references to the characteristic majolica style of the coast is a masterpiece.

The presence of colours, that in the vibrant light of the sun and the reflections of the sea make rise a feeling of peace, freedom and happinness, can hardly be described. Beautiful are the murals, various artists have given as donations to the city and its inhabitants. To those, who see them for the first time and those who return to look at them they kindle admiration.
A big compliment has to be made to the town majors who ever since the Second World War have gone great length in preserving the originality of the town and its nature, underlining its beauty only with some brushes of colour.
Continuing the slope to the SS 163 we pass the various parts of the town of Furore which are spread on the hills of S. Elia, S. Michele and S. Giacomo, always stopping at the plattforms available to take in the breathtaking panorama. Remaining on this road we will come to the splendid town of Conca dei Marini to which has been dedicated a seperat section on this site.
It is to be stressed that once going on land the various hills of S. Elia, S. Michele and S. Giacomo can be explored by never ending and colourful staircases.
Untill the last century, before the SS 163 was built, the fiord of Furore was used as a port for unloading goods.
At S. Elia there are various churches to be visited like S. Elia, consecrated in 1478 and showing a triptych of the Holy Virgin and S. Bartolomeo (1482) built by Angelo Antonello da Capua, presenting one of the coast's masterpieces.
The fascinating fiord of Furore was loved by many stars like Greta Garbo, Stokowski and the unforgetable Anna Magnani, who bought one of the fisher houses here.
The beauty of this section of the Coast of Amalfi is to be appreciated fully only from the sea. The amount of boat trips with this destination is not surprising, for only this way one can discover paradise-like beaches and rocks.
These little paradises are made for those people who can indulge in and appreciate quietness, beauty, the sound of the sea and the wind on their skin.
